LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – It’s a service through the Allen County Sheriff’s Office that most residents hope they’ll never need.

The Allen County Regional Bomb Squad covers an 11-county area and responds to a variety of calls. To stay prepared, the team trains twice a month with their robot and other specialized equipment.

Training and technology keep Allen County Bomb Squad ready for emergencies

Sgt. Matt Gill, Bomb Squad Commander, said, This is a very technical job. It’s always changing. The threat always changes. We got to stay up on using our tools so that we always know how to use stuff when the time comes. Anytime there’s a suspicious package or a type call or a bomb threat at different facilities, we will respond to that. Or if families are cleaning out houses and they find old military munitions, we will respond to those.”

Gill says the squad averages about 15 to 20 calls per year, with the majority involving the pickup of old munitions devices.
