Two competitors share first-ever tie in Rate of Gain Dairy Beef Steer at Allen County Fair

LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Two kids made history on Friday at the Allen County Fair.

11-year-old Anson Kohli and 17-year-old McKenzie Miller had their cows, Neon and Moon Night, respectively, tie for reserve champion in the Rate of Gain for dairy beef steer. The competition measures the weight of cows from their dairy beef feeder years until they become dairy beef steers, recording the daily net weight gain. Both Neon and Moon Night gained 2.97 pounds per day, leading to the tie for first place. This has never happened before in fair history, and we asked both winners about making history.

“Honestly, I was just purely shocked, especially from having them from the same barn and being born at the same time. It's just... it's outstanding,” says McKenzie Miller, 1st Place Winner of Rate of Gain Dairy Beef Steer Competition.

“I was confused at first because I didn't understand that it had never happened before, and when I learned that, I was very shocked,” says Anson Kohli, 1st Place Winner of Rate of Gain Dairy Beef Steer Competition.

There was only one reserve champion sign prepared, and another will have to be made for the second first-place winner.
