Pope Leo XIV has bestowed one of the Catholic Church’s highest honors on St. John Henry Newman, declaring him a doctor of the church. Newman, a 19th-century British convert and theologian, joins the ranks of figures like St. Augustine and St. Therese of Lisieux. This title recognizes his universal appeal and contribution to understanding the Christian faith. On Saturday, Leo also declared Newman a co-patron of Catholic education. Newman is admired for his writings on doctrine and truth, and he remains a unifying figure cherished by both Anglicans and Catholics.
