Students at Lima Senior returned from Christmas break with a new rule in place to limit cell phone use to only during their lunch period. The Lima School Board developed the policy for cell phones and personal communication devices last fall and approved it during their December meeting. There is an exception if the teachers get permission to use it for a lesson. The policy also lays out punishment if the students are caught using it during unapproved times, from confiscation of the device for the day up to an in-school suspension for multiple violations.

Ohio is seeing success in schools that have limited smartphone use by students during the school day. The state passed a law requiring schools to have a policy in place by July 2025. So far, 60% of the school districts have implemented policies, either banning cell phones during the whole school day or banning them from the classrooms. Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted says that the schools that enacted a total ban during the school day have seen a change in the attitudes of the students.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed House Bill 250 today at Karrer Middle School in Dublin. The new law will require every school district in Ohio to establish an official policy governing cell phone usage during school hours and aims to minimize student use of cell phones in K-12 schools.
