December 13, 2024, Press Release from the Lima-Allen County Regional Planning Commission: LIMA—The Lima-Allen County Safe Community Coalition met this morning at Mercy Health to honor its coalition members, announce the recent FY25 grant award of $46,200 from the Ohio Department of Public Safety, and discuss the importance of driving sober this winter. Twenty coalition members attended the biannual breakfast where safety advocates come together to recap safe driving campaigns, like Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Megan Kinnear, chairperson for Lima-Allen County Safe Community Coalition, said the grant became effective Oct. 1, 2024 and runs through Sept. 30, 2025.

July 18, 2024, Press Release from the Ohio Department of Public Safety: (COLUMBUS, Ohio) – Ohio Department of Public Safety Director Andy Wilson today announced the hiring of an anti-human trafficking professional to coordinate the efforts of the Governor's Human Trafficking Task Force. Kelli Cary returns to Ohio after serving for about two years as CEO of AncoraTN, which combats human trafficking in central Tennessee. Previously in Ohio, Cary served the human trafficking community in jobs at RAHAB Ministries, the Hope & Healing Survivor Resource Center, and the Salvation Army.

Ohio drivers should expect to see more motorcycle riders on the road as peak riding season gets underway, according to Motorcycle Ohio, a division of the Ohio Traffic Safety Office. Motorcycle Ohio is raising awareness about motorcycle safety ahead of National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in May. In 2023, 230 Ohioans were killed in motorcycle-related crashes, a 47% increase from just five years ago.

From December 24th until December 27th, there were seven fatal crashes the resulted in 9 deaths, which are down from last year’s numbers. 6 of those who died were not wearing a seatbelt. Troopers saw a 137 percent increase in impaired driving compared to last year, resulting in 142 impaired driving arrests. There were also 907 crashes, and 85 drug arrests in the state, both up from 2019.

The “Save by the Belt” Club is a joint effort with the Ohio Department of Public Safety and over 400 law enforcement agencies in the state. It brings awareness to accidents that could have turned out worse if seat belts were not worn. In 2019, over 450 Ohioans were killed in traffic crashes where a seat belt was not used.
