VAN WERT, Ohio (WLIO) -Bath remained unbeaten with a 35-28 victory over Van Wert on Friday night, improving to 3-0 for the first time since 2002. Both teams entered the Western Buckeye League matchup at 2-0.
The Wildcats struck first after a muffed punt, as quarterback Zach Welsch powered in on a short run to put Bath on top 7-0. Van Wert responded when Micah Cowan completed a short touchdown pass to Geary Hilleary to even the score.
Cougars quarterback Zach Crummey then found Xavier Kelly, who weaved through defenders for a 14-7 Van Wert lead. But Bath’s Liam Sullivan came up with a blocked punt in the end zone and recovered it to tie the game again.
The back-and-forth continued, with Crummey scoring on an 11-yard rush before Bath’s Mikey Hale answered with a touchdown run to send the teams to halftime tied at 21.
In the second half, Bath found enough stops and key plays to pull out the 35-28 win, moving to 3-0 and securing its best start in more than two decades.
