Celina (WLIO) - St. Marys continued its dominance in the Grand Lake rivalry Friday night, defeating Celina 42-14 for its ninth win in the last 10 meetings between the schools.
Both teams entered the Western Buckeye League matchup looking for their first victory of the season, but the Roughriders took control in the second half behind senior running back Caleb Schmidt.
Schmidt powered to the three-yard line on a long run before punching in a short touchdown to extend St. Marys’ lead to 21-0. Celina answered when quarterback Parker Wynk connected with Brodee Schlute-Arnold for a long touchdown that cut the deficit to 21-7.
St. Marys quickly responded as Schmidt weaved through defenders and sprinted to the end zone for his third score of the night. Later, Dyllan Fink sealed the win with an interception in the end zone.
Schmidt finished with all six of the Roughriders’ touchdowns, lifting St. Marys to its first win of the season while keeping Celina searching for theirs.
