ST. HENRY, Ohio — In a game filled with momentum swings and late-inning drama, Coldwater emerged victorious with a 9-8 walk-off win over Fort Recovery on Tuesday night in Mercer County ACME baseball action.
Trailing 1-0 in the first, Coldwater’s Derek Dues lined a shot to left center to bring home Bennett Spriggs from first, tying the game early. Fort Recovery answered in the top of the second when Ian McCain’s deep fly allowed Dylan Klenke to tag and score, leveling the contest at 2-2.
Coldwater responded with a six-run outburst in the bottom of the third. The highlight came off the bat of Charlie Stammen, who hammered a ball to the left field fence. Briggs Howell scored easily, and Stammen advanced to third on an error, capping the big inning that gave the Cavaliers an 8-2 lead.
But Fort Recovery wasn’t finished. Klenke continued his productive day with a deep fly in the fifth, bringing in Brodie Hart. The Indians stormed back, eventually tying the game at 8 in the late innings.
In the bottom of the seventh, Coldwater sealed it. A timely hit led to the walk-off run, giving the Cavaliers the 9-8 win in a game that featured clutch hitting on both sides.
Coldwater now advances to face Minster on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in St. Henry.
