Strong opening day for area wrestlers at state tournament as several advance at the Schottenstein Center

COLUMBUS (WLIO) — Several area wrestlers advanced during day one of the Ohio high school state wrestling tournament at the Schottenstein Center.
In Division III championship preliminaries, Versailles junior Trent Huber opened his tournament with a pinfall victory in the 106-pound bracket. Allen East freshman Langston McClain followed with a narrow 14-13 win at 120 pounds.
Lima Central Catholic saw three wrestlers move on, highlighted by Antwain Adams earning a 17-1 technical fall at 138 pounds. Jordan Neal won by pinfall in the 144-pound class, while Carter Lester also advanced with a pinfall victory at 190 pounds.
St. John’s reigning state champion Edward Kessen secured a 16-1 technical fall at 150 pounds, and Paulding’s Thor Etter advanced with a pinfall win at 157.
In Division II preliminaries, Wapakoneta’s Keyno Mendez picked up an 11-1 victory at 165 pounds. Teammate Wyatt Buell followed with a dominant 11-0 win in the 175-pound bracket.
Competition continues over the next two days as several local wrestlers look to make runs toward state championships.
