LIMA (WLIO) — Wapakoneta’s postseason baseball run came to an end Thursday in the Division III district semifinals at Tiffin University.

The Redskins fell to Lexington by a 5-1 final score.

Wapakoneta stayed within striking distance early thanks in part to pitcher Drew Bailey, who recorded six strikeouts on the day, including a punchout in the second inning with the Redskins trailing 1-0.

Lexington gradually built its lead before Wapakoneta threatened in the fifth inning. Daron Houser sparked the offense with a one-hop double off the left field wall, but the Redskins were unable to capitalize. Wapakoneta finished with just four hits in the game.

The Redskins finally broke through in the seventh inning when Jarrett Mullen lifted a fly ball to left field that allowed Cohl Springer to score from third, cutting the deficit to 5-1.

But with runners on the corners and down to their final out, Wapakoneta’s comeback hopes ended on a pop up to third base.

The loss ends the Redskins’ bid to return to the state tournament.
