LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – It’s only days until the official opening of the 175th Allen County Fair, and organizers say there will be something for everyone.
Troy Elwer, the fair’s promotions and operations manager, spoke Monday at the Lima Rotary Club, giving an update on preparations at the fairgrounds for the big event. Dozens of projects — from installing a new main water line to electrical upgrades, painting, and more — have been completed, totaling more than $2 million in improvements funded by grants, donations, and local contributions.
Elwer also detailed special plans for the 175th anniversary, including a "Sunday Celebration" offering several free events around the "Visit Greater Lima" grandstand area.
“Something brand new that we’ve never done before. And lots of people have questioned as to why we charge for grandstand events, and it’s largely due to the fact that those do cost a lot of money to bring in each year, but the Sunday celebration is all about bringing families together and giving the community back a really neat event,” Elwer said.
The Sunday events on August 17 include a car show from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., a concert by Direct Energy at 1 p.m., a performance by The Cyrkle from Chicago at 5 p.m., and a concert by the last remaining Monkee, Micky Dolenz, at 6:15 p.m.
