LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Area golfers grabbed their clubs and hit the green in support of a good cause.

Golfers teed off for the American Cancer Society’s Allen County Golf Classic, raising money and awareness in the fight against cancer. With a goal of raising $100,000, funds were generated through morning and afternoon golf teams, ticket sales, sponsorships and an auction. While there was some friendly competition to sink a hole-in-one, the focus of the day was on supporting cancer research and helping patients undergoing treatment.

“One of the main ones being cancer research. In 2025, we are funding over $23 million here in the state of Ohio in cancer research specifically. Other programs that we have is our Hope Lodge. We are lucky to have one here in Cleveland. People can stay at a Hope Lodge if there is one in the area for totally free. It's like a home away from home. People can cook their own meals there, free transportation to and from their treatment as well, and those are just two of the things that this money helps fund,” says Alli Schmitz, Senior Development Manager, American Cancer Society.

“I’ve been part of this committee for over 10 years, grateful to be part of this committee for over 10 years. You know, our end goal always is to create awareness for the services that are provided to people in Allen County and surrounding counties,” says Laura Meyer, Co-Chair, Allen County Golf Classic.

This year’s event honored Chad King, who is currently battling pancreatic cancer. During the evening portion of the event, King shared his story and highlighted the support he’s received throughout his journey.
