LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — It's ever too early to learn how to stay safe on the road. That's why Big Brothers and Big Sisters partnered with the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) for a "Car Care" workshop.
Inside the UNOH shop, participants learned practical tips to keep their vehicles running smoothly—and what to do when something goes wrong.

“They are learning how to find information about their car, how to locate things, what fluids they need, troubleshooting all sorts of things... even tips on how to communicate with mechanics and people servicing the car,” said Errin Boyer, community engagement specialist for Big Brothers Big Sisters.
“I think it's important because basic knowledge can just help. Especially if a mechanic wants to scam you, or just so you can help yourself and be more self-sufficient,” said "Little Brother" Tevin Lever-Roose, a student at Bath High School.
The workshop also provided another opportunity for mentors and mentees to bond—something participants say is just as important as the skills they learned.
Getting under the hood of a car and understanding its parts was a huge confidence boost for some.
“It's great because it gets Tevin and I out here for some hours, build a relationship, get to know him better. It's all about frequency of time and the amount of time you spend. Three hours here doing this and getting lunch afterwards... it's all good stuff. He's a good kid. You want to make an impact, and this helps him out, helps his mom and family,” said Buddy Yantz, Tevin's "Big Brother."
Big Brothers Big Sisters is always looking to teach kids valuable life lessons. For more information about hosting a demonstration or becoming a mentor, visit www.bbbswco.com or call 419-222-8500.
