LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Lima Police Department has received a grant aimed at enhancing officer safety and improving communication with other emergency responders.

Enbridge Gas donated $10,000 to the department, funding the purchase of additional Multi-Agency Radio Communications System (MARCS) radios and in-car printers. MARCS is Ohio’s statewide digital radio and data network that allows public safety agencies to communicate with one another in real time.

Officials say the upgraded equipment will strengthen coordination between local law enforcement, fire departments, dispatch centers and county sheriff’s offices.

Officials say the upgraded equipment will strengthen coordination between local law enforcement, fire departments, dispatch centers and county sheriff’s offices.

“It’s going to help us communicate better with all area emergency services — fire departments, dispatch centers, county sheriff’s offices — and our officers in our cars,” said Lt. Ben Thompson of the Lima Police Department. “It just makes the city safer, the community safer and the officers safer.”

Enbridge representatives say the grant reflects the company’s broader commitment to community investment.

“It’s important we invest in the communities because we have a commitment toward three core missions: sustainable communities, vibrant communities and safe communities,” said George Smith, director of gas operations for Enbridge Ohio.

Smith added that the funding specifically supports the company’s focus on promoting safety and reinforcing its role in corporate citizenship.
