ELIDA, OH (WLIO) - Elida Middle School students unearthed the facts about invasive species here at home.
The Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District talked to Elida seventh graders about various animal, plant, and fungus invasive species in Allen County.
The Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District talked to all Elida seventh graders about various animal, plant, and fungus invasive species in Allen County. Students even got the chance to examine two different turtles. One was the native painted turtle, and the other was the invasive red-eared slider turtle. This real-life example is to show students that invasive species are already in their backyard.

"We think of nature as being far away. You know, we see it on TV, or we saw it in a magazine, or maybe it's out at the parks or something like that... But really, it's right here. It's in your yard; it's in our living spaces all the time, and it's sometimes unhealthy in our living spaces, and we can mitigate that. One of the things that we introduce into our landscapes to make it more unhealthy are invasive species, and that's what we're talking about today," said Dan Hodges, naturalist at Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District.
Students will use today's lesson for their science projects.
