September 13, 2024, Press Release from the Ohio State University College of Engineering: The Ohio State University College of Engineering is excited to share a new, useful, free online cybersecurity training resource and wants to get the word out to Ohio small businesses. The Ohio State University’s Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence has received a competitive federal grant to provide free cybersecurity training for small businesses in Ohio.
 
The program aligns with several federal and state of Ohio initiatives to help raise the cybersecurity posture of Ohio’s nearly 1 million small businesses. The modules offered help to ensure that Ohio continues to be a vital part of the manufacturing supply chain by offering free educational services based on the NIST Cybersecurity Framework that can be used by small businesses to help them show compliance with the Ohio Data Protection Act. The program provides complementary services to expand the existing outreach by the Ohio Cyber Range Institute and the Ohio Cyber Collaboration Committee for critical infrastructure and local government. 
  
This course is intended to be an introduction to cybersecurity practices that takes on average 3-4 hours in total. Upon completion, a badge will be issued. Companies can sign up any employees they wish to take the course. The course will outline general best practices and provide information about many different areas of a business's cybersecurity plan. Two more in-depth courses will be launched after this initial course to develop additional cybersecurity awareness.

  • Module 3: Phishing 
  • Module 4: Cyber Inventory 
  • Module 5: Internal Auditing 
  • Module 6: Data Protection and Access Control 
  • Module 7: Network and Endpoint Security 
  • Module 8: Security Awareness, Incident Response, Vendor Management 
  • Module 9: Patch Management, Backups, Disaster Recovery 
 
The first step is for the business to register at https://cdme.osu.edu/sba. They will then verify that they are an Ohio small business by confirming on https://businesssearch.ohiosos.gov/, then enroll them in the course. 
 
This course is free and available to all Ohio small businesses.
