BLUFFTON, OH (WLIO) - Through an apprenticeship at GROB Systems, Inc., students will have opportunities to gain skills in several areas. Our Katie Honigford spoke with one apprentice in the mechanical pathway as part of our Growing STEM series.
Mechanical apprentice Cameron Hedrick found out about the opportunities at GROB Systems, Inc. the way that many aspiring mechanics and electricians in our area do, by word of mouth and getting a look while still in high school.
"I have family friends that work here, so they kind of helped introduce me to it, and Grob came to my school, and we were able to come here and do tours. I've always been into hands-on mechanical work, so I thought this would be a very good fit for me, and it just led on from there," explained Cameron Hedrick, an apprentice at GROB Systems, Inc.
With that early look at the facility, Hedrick is now in the apprenticeship program, taking the mechanical pathway. He and other apprentices on that path learn more about the running machines that are used at GROB in several of the departments that are on-site.
"We do rotations so that you go a little bit through each department and you get a mix of everything, so you can decide, 'oh, that's what I'm looking for and what department that I want to work in," said Hedrick.
GROB apprentices also receive an education from Rhodes State College while training with GROB. After mechanical apprentices complete the program, they could be placed into one of many departments, including final assembly, fabrication, or the machine shop.
With all that he has learned with GROB, Hedrick says that anyone thinking about a job in the mechanical industry should take a look to see if GROB is the right fit for them.
"This is an amazing program, and you learn so much about all types of different things. It gives you a good mix of everything that you might be looking for," Hedrick said.
