More than 100 career tech students getting a look into what their future could hold. United Association Local 776 opened their doors for some hands-on experiences as a glimpse into what they do. The union has provided highly skilled and trained plumbers, pipefitters, and service technicians to west central Ohio since 1937. The open house was highlighting National Apprenticeship Week, and the students were taking it all in.

Governor Jon Husted, and Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) Director Matt Damschroder are reminding Ohioans considering new careers that construction jobs are in demand in Ohio. More than 245,500 Ohioans work in the construction industry, which equates to about one in 23 workers, and many learned their skills through apprenticeship programs. Apprentices earn while they learn, avoid student loan debt and, when they complete their programs, earn an average of $72,000 a year.

September 5, 2024, Press Release from the Ohio Department of Commerce: COLUMBUS, Ohio – New rule changes proposed by the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB) will take effect tomorrow, Sept. 6, creating a new pathway for contractors to become licensed with the State of Ohio. OCILB is within the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Industrial Compliance and is responsible for issuing licenses to qualified electrical, HVAC, plumbing, hydronics and refrigeration contractors who successfully pass the PSI licensing examination.

Our OhioMeansJobs Student Employee of the Month is Joe Mosley, a 2024 Bath graduate who is on his way to a successful career at GROB! Shortly after graduating from Bath High School, Joe Mosley began as an apprentice at GROB Systems Inc. He has an interest in engineering, and the program helps him learn about a variety of jobs and skills through hands-on practical applications.

When figuring out what career path he would like to take in life, Jahim Montano found that a visit to GROB Systems, Inc. in Bluffton helped him pick a path slightly different than his original plans. Montano is currently in the electrical pathway at GROB, where apprentices learn skills like print reading and wiring in the facility's electrical lab.

Our Katie Honigford spoke with one apprentice in the mechanical pathway as part of our Growing STEM series. Mechanical apprentice Cameron Hedrick found out about the opportunities at GROB Systems, Inc. the way that many aspiring mechanics and electricians in our area do, by word of mouth and getting a look while still in high school.

On Tuesday, Nutrien announced a $100,000 investment in the "Trade-Up" pre-apprenticeship program at the New Innovation Hub in Lima's Central District. The program is designed to provide training and support for adults who are interested in exploring a career in the trades. The hub will offer hands-on classes in various areas, such as electrical, contracting, and machining. After their training, students will get connected to local industries and businesses, leading to full apprenticeships.
