High school students check out what UNOH has to offer during fall open house

LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The University of Northwestern Ohio was packed with area high school students and their families on Friday.

UNOH kicked off its two-day fall open house for prospective high school students seeking post-secondary education. The campus opened up classroom doors, labs, and much more for the college-bound kids to check out all aspects of the college experience, including academic programs and majors, extracurricular activities and clubs, and general campus life. A big event of the open house is the Wendell Schick Scholarship Test for high school seniors who can potentially win scholarships from $2,000 to as much as $40,000 in various categories. 

Even if visiting students do not know what they want to do, simply walking onto campus is a huge first step.

"You need to experience it. You need to walk onto the campus and really see if it's a good fit for you. We've got students here today from California, from Florida, from New York, from all over the country; we just want to see if UNOH is right for them, and this is just their best opportunity, throughout the year, to be able to do that," said Tony Azzarello, director of admissions at the University of Northwestern Ohio.

On campus, we talked to one high school student from Hicksville about why coming to these events is so important to picking the right college for him.

"I definitely think it's important to look at different colleges and just get that experience of going there because you're looking at 2 to 4 years of your life, and I've been to a few other colleges, and just getting that experience of going there and seeing what it's like is really important," commented David Barnes, junior from Hicksville.

The University of Northwestern Ohio will continue its fall open house on Saturday, November 2, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
