Every journey has a story, and you can read about some history making ones in Auglaize County. The Historical Society opened the Wapakoneta Museum for the season by showcasing a poster exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution. The series is called “Journey Stories” and talks about the 400-year history of stories of how migration of people, like the western expansion and the displacement of Native Americans, shaped the United States. Besides the poster displays, the Wapakoneta Museum permanent exhibits reflects the growth and development of the city and the surrounding area, from everything from recreation to industry.
“I don’t know if the younger people, probably don’t realize all of the industry that was here 30, 40, 50, 60, maybe 100 years ago that was here in Wapakoneta and all of these things aren’t in the schools or the history books,” says Deborah Vantilburg of the Auglaize County Historical Society.
The poster exhibit will be traveling through the county as part of the historical society’s heritage tourism initiative this year.
