LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Young kids went to the Y to learn a new sport and meet new friends their age.
The Lima Family YMCA began their Shoot n Scoop program, where kids ages 3-6 are taught the basics of basketball. The instructor led them through passing drills, dribble relays, and other important skills in the sport, then afterwards the kids hung out and had ice cream.
The drills not only gave them a foundation to understand how to play, but also gave them practice communicating better with both their parents and other kids their age. For the YMCA, offering programs like this is about more than just teaching kids how to handle the ball.
"It helps them channel their energy somewhere that they want to channel it to. Playing a sport at a young age, you get to find something that you have a passion and love for and we see how it pans out the older you get," said Orion Monford, the Sports and Health and Wellness Director at the Lima YMCA.
The YMCA will be holding Shoot n Scoop every Friday through Feb. 10th. Spots are limited, so they ask that you register early, either online or in person.
