Law Enforcement respond Wednesday to standoff situation

Law enforcement were called to a home Wednesday afternoon for what started as a hostage situation, what transpired next lasted nearly two hours.

"Officers were flagged down about a woman who said she had been held against her will," Lt. Andy Green with the Lima Police Department said.

Officers tell us 28-year-old Jacquavious Cartwright of Lima walked into a family members home on Union Street, and held two women against their will. Neighbors say they watched as one of the women escaped.

"The hostage like jumped out the window, broke her leg or something, and then the ambulance came up and picked her up. she was laying on the ground right here," neighbor Carlos Briggs Jr., said.

After the women got out Cartwright barricaded himself inside the home with what officers believe was a hand gun.

"Officers continued securing the perimeter. Additional assets were brought in such as our SWAT team and hostage negotiation team," Green said.

As the situation unfolded, tensions grew with the crowd outside. Family members were pleading for Cartwright to come out, even speaking to him on the phone multiple times.

"We can always love him but we couldn't love him like we want to love him in a grave," his aunt Debbie Hall, said.

He finally surrendered around 2:20pm and was taken into custody. Family members say they are just happy it was able to end peacefully.

"I really appreciate having some good officers out here today, so it's not a fatality. We do have our loved one to where whatever's going on with him in his heart and mind, we can seek help for him," Hall said.

Detectives are now questioning Cartwright to find out what might have lead this whole situation.
