Lima City Schools to start summer food programs with a new food truck option

Just because school is out for the summer, that doesn’t mean that the Lima City School District stops providing for their students and others.

Starting Monday, June 6th, the “Summer Food Program” will begin. Thanks to federal funding through the USDA, anyone from age 1 to 18 years can get a free lunch Monday through Thursday from 11 am to 12:30 pm. They can come to Heritage, Independence, Unity, or Liberty schools for the meal, and they can also sign up for a little extra at a few of the sites.

Valeria Bodine, Summer Food Coordinator says, “We have weekend bags at Heritage, Independence, and Liberty. They get two meals which are two breakfasts and two lunches to last through the weekend.”

Parents do need to sign up for those bags. The school is also trying to reach more children by using a “Food Truck” concept in other areas of the district.

Jessica Baker is the food truck coordinator and adds, “It gives up new options to get our foo out there, feed more kids. Kids that can’t walk to the school and we’re taking it to them.”

Children can pick up meals at Lincoln Park and children can get shelf-stable foods at the Lima West and Brower-Maplewood apartments.
