LIMA, OH (WLIO) - 12 local high school students received scholarships from the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority on Saturday.
The Sigma Mu Omega chapter and the Sisters in Service Community Foundation awarded funds to students from Lima Senior, Perry, Shawnee, Elida, and Lima Central Catholic. The scholarships come from money raised at the sorority's annual MLK Breakfast and donations from local businesses.
Alpha Kappa Alpha was started by college-educated women who wanted to make a difference in their community, and investing in the future of the children is just one way they help.
"Just the little bit that we can do to help means something to us, and it helps us with our reach and letting kids know there are people out there and organizations out there that care about what they do for the future," said Robin Frazier, the president of the Sigma Mu Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. "I know that meant a lot to me when I was going through school, and I think that it gives young people a hope that people do care."
