A new scholarship was announced to promote diversity within the Lima Police Department.
The William K. Davenport Memorial Scholarship is being awarded by the Community Enrichment Dinner to an African American student in the Apollo Career Center's Basic Police Academy Program. It's named after Lima's first Black Chief of Police, who served from 1968 to 1978.
Davenport's great granddaughter Erica was there when the scholarship was announced, and she is certain that he would appreciate being part of something that could make a difference in the community.
"Growing up, I went to a lot of dinners with him about different organizations that he was involved with after his retirement; he spent every minute he had pouring back into this community and finding new ways to reach out and help people, so having the scholarship, it would mean the world to him," Davenport said.
You can contact Joy Baeumel at the Apollo Career Center for more information about the scholarship and a copy of the application form.
