VAN WERT, OH (WLIO) - Van Wert Hospital is taking action against hunger in their community.
Over 8 tons of food were distributed to more than 200 families in the county in just two hours.
The first of two planned food drives this summer took place at Trinity Friends Church on Tuesday afternoon. Volunteers from Ohio Health Van Wert Hospital, United Way, and West Ohio Food Bank came out to distribute both food and household items to those in need. The three organizations came together to combat the serious issue of food insecurity. Over 8 tons of food were distributed to more than 200 families in the county in just two hours.
The next food drive will take place on August 27, 2024, from noon to 2 p.m. at Trinity Friends Church, located at 605 N Franklin St, Van Wert, OH 45891.
"I think you're in awe the whole time. You don't really realize how many people need assistance, so just to see the cars lined up even an hour before we started here—to get that was just overwhelming, like it just fills your cup knowing that you were able to serve people in the community," said Paula Stabler, chief nursing officer at Van Wert Hospital.
Among those volunteering was a woman who had once used the pantry and now is helping others.
"I was in line to get food, but God said I'm here to help. What do you want me to do? And ever since, I've been helping out here and I help inside at the food bank, and it has brought a purpose to my life," stated Verna Gillette, a volunteer at the food distribution.
