Salvation Army short on goal, entering last week of Christmas in July campaign

The Salvation Army's summer kettles campaign is in the final stretch.

The Red Kettles will be out for one more week for the Christmas in July campaign. According to Paul Downing of the Salvation Army, they are currently down $1,500. They have a goal of $2,500 but also are two days shorter than what they ran last year. The money primarily will go to children's programs at the Salvation Army. The kettles can be found around Lima at places like Walmart, Kewpee and Sam's Club all from 11 to 7 pm. Downing said the reason behind the low numbers could be a combination of weather and the fact that it's just summer time.

"It's summer," Downing said, program coordinator for the Salvation Army. "People are out having a great time so they don't think about the need that's out there. They don't think about giving to us or organizations like us. It's always an important time of year, to make sure you don't forget those people and people like us, the services don't end."

Downing says they are looking for some volunteers, either individuals, churches or organizations, that would like to help collect money at the donation locations Monday through Saturday.  if you are looking to volunteer call the Salvation Army at 419-224-9055 and dial extension 211.
