WAYNESFIELD, OH (WLIO) - Waynesfield-Goshen students were touched by the devastation that residents in North Carolina faced from Hurricane Helene. The students are collecting new or gently used coats, gloves, and hats for the residents of Black Mountain, North Carolina.

They are working with a Baptist church in that area to help provide the coats to people who need them. The schools in black mountain recently reopened after they dealt with flooding from a record amount of rain in late September. Now with recovery efforts ongoing and winter fast approaching, the Waynesfield-Goshen students are asking for help to give kids and adults down there who lost everything a warm coat.

"It kind of puts a lot on your heart, because we don't ever really experience that as a community, something that hard, and it feels good to go out and help someone who that happened to. We are desperately looking for children's coats. Clean, gently used, new; we desperately need children's coats," says Eli Zechman, Sophomore, Waynesfield-Goshen.

They will be collecting coats until November 15, 2024.
The students have a few drop-off locations for their coat drive, including the school lobbies for the high school and elementary, Lowes in Wapakoneta, the Wapak Athletic Club, Wings and Rings on the east side of Lima, and the Salty Longhorn. They will be collecting coats until November 15, 2024.
