Work continues on Grand Avenue for collapsed sewer

Repairs are still being made to a collapsed sewer line on Grand Avenue.

Workers have been digging along Grand Avenue near Baxter Street for the past 3 and half weeks. On February 25, a 78-inch section of combined sewer line collapsed causing a huge hole to open up on Grand Avenue. The line was 26 feet down in the ground, which created a major excavation project for the city.

“It took quite a while to get it excavated, get it cleaned out, find good pipe for us to tie on to replace the collapsed area. We hired a contractor to assist with doing that, you know that work. They are making progress now, of course, today's weather didn’t help a whole lot. Probably by the end of this week, they will be putting pipe in the ground,” explained Mike Caprella, Lima Utilities Director.

The city has maintained sewer service to the residents in that area during the work. Caprella says if they are able to start getting the line replaced this week, it could be possible that they can start filling the hole and opening up Grand Avenue by the end of next week.
