The State of Ohio is making some changes to the Homestead Exemption Tax that will benefit many Ohioans. The Allen County auditor released that new income thresholds have been established for seniors 65 years of age or older, disabled veterans, and spouses of first responders killed in the line of duty. The amounts adjust with inflation annually, and properties have a new market value because of the new triennial.

The Federal Social Security Fairness Act passed through the U.S. Senate Chamber in the final session Saturday before Congress resets next year. This act will eliminate WEP and GPO allowing public employees that pay into state sponsored retirement systems to receive their full social security benefits.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and Ohio has a program that could help people with disabilities save their hard-earned cash without risking their benefits. The Ohio Treasurer's Office offers the STABLE Account and allows people with disabilities to save and invest money without losing their eligibility for programs like Medicaid or supplemental security income. It is not like a checking or savings account, but more like a 401K or college savings account and allows people who qualify to grow their money and to save for long-term disability expenses. It only takes a few minutes to sign up for, and it could be a game changer for people involved.

Through its STABLE Account program, the Ohio Treasurer’s office is proud to help thousands of individuals thrive in the workforce while being able to save and invest their earnings. A STABLE account is a specialized savings and investment account for people living with disabilities that allows them to save and invest money without losing eligibility for certain means-tested benefits, such as Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). STABLE accountholders can save up to $18,000 annually without losing federal assistance, and they can save an additional $14,580 each year if they’re employed. Earnings on STABLE accounts grow tax-free if they are spent on qualified expenses, which include housing, transportation, living expenses, healthcare, assistive technology, and more.

September 25, 2024, Press Release from Habitat for Humanity of Findlay/Hancock County: Findlay, OH, Sept. 25, 2024 Habitat for Humanity of Findlay/Hancock County will officially finish construction of its 60th and 61st homes during a Home Dedication ceremony open to the public on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at 4:30 p.m. The ceremony will be held at the build site, located in the 1700 block of Bishop Lane, Findlay, OhioThe program for the dedication will include a blessing, words from the new homeowners, the Butler and McMaster families, as well as comments from Wendy McCormick, Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity of Findlay/Hancock County, and Kelly Croy, Habitat’s Board President. The Butler family consists of a single mother and her daughter. Their housing situation left them burdened due to continued high rent increases. Additionally, their living conditions were unsafe, with no ventilation in the bedrooms and an exterior door in the daughter’s bedroom. For the past two years, the Butler family has been working with Habitat for Humanity after seeing several close friends go through the process. After a year of financial education and savings, they were chosen to be a partner family. They are forever grateful that everyone at Habitat chose to put their faith in them and grant this opportunity. They have gained so much knowledge already in the program and cannot wait to move into their own home!

For over 50 years, the Lima Dana plant provided good-paying jobs to this region, and current and former employees are dealing with the announcement of its closure in 2025. President of the UAW 1765 retirees, Gary Frueh, says the Lima plant was highly regarded in the Dana Corporation, and it was the star plant in the division during the 80s and 90s. The plant also received the prestigious "Malcolm Baldrige Award" in 2000 for manufacturing.

August 28, 2024, Press Release from AARP Ohio: COLUMBUS, Ohio-Today, AARP released a report that shows an estimated 127,193 of Ohioans on Medicare prescription drug plans will see savings thanks to a new out-of-pocket cap that starts January 1, 2025. The savings are made possible by a provision in the 2022 prescription drug law that AARP championed which caps out-of-pocket prescription drug costs every year, beginning at $2,000 next year, for America’s 56 million Medicare drug plan enrollees.

Toledo Tomorrow, a non-profit organization that assists individuals in completing the FAFSA form, was at the Lima Public Library. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the key to the eligibility for grants and other funding from the college you want to attend. Education specialists say they can't express enough the importance of completing the application.
