Monday was Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and representatives of Elder Victim Ministry in Allen and Putnam counties held a special dedication at the Primrose Retirement Community of Lima. The representatives placed a plaque at a tree on Primrose's property, to honor elder victims around the community and the world. Residents of Primrose were there to watch the dedication. This ministry works to support elders through different services including safety planning, trauma support, and more. They say it's vital to raise awareness of the abuse they face.

It's the largest unmet need in victim services and one local agency is working to change that in Allen County. Crime Victim Services saw a need and started their Elder Victim Ministry in 2011 with more than 3,000 senior citizens being helped since then in Allen and Putnam counties. Crime Victim Services officials say they work closely with police and Adult Protective Services to assist seniors as many of their cases don't make it to court.

While many have been busy Christmas shopping, scammers have been actively waiting to steal their identities.
