A former Van Wert mail carrier has changed his plea on a federal charge for burning undelivered mail.
October 17, 2024, Press Release from the United States Department of Justice, Northern District of Ohio: YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – An indictment was unsealed charging two Ohio men with the murder of an on-duty United States Postal Service (USPS) Letter Carrier in March of 2024. According to the indictment, on March 2, 2024, Kaprise Sledge, 24, of Warren, Ohio, and Thomas Sledge, 44, of Youngstown, Ohio, used a firearm to kill the mail carrier during the course of his official employment with the USPS. Kaprise Sledge and Thomas Sledge are each charged with one count of murder of an officer and employee of the United States and one count of discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence.
July 11, 2024, Press Release from the United States Attorney’s Office Northern District of Ohio: TOLEDO – A federal grand jury has returned a three-count indictment charging Damere Wilson, 20, of Toledo, Ohio, with robbery of mail, money, or other property of the United States, stealing mail collection box keys, and mail theft. The violations allegedly took place while a United States Postal Service letter carrier was on a delivery route. According to court documents, an individual approached the letter carrier on March 12, 2024, delivering mail at the Piccadilly Apartments in Oregon, Ohio. The letter carrier indicated a hard object was shoved into their back and the individual demanded the keys to the mailboxes.
The Lima Police Department were on scene after a mail truck was struck and overturned Tuesday morning. Officers were called out to the intersection of Market and Pierce Streets around 9:30 a.m. for a mail truck that had overturned. When they arrived on scene they found out that the mail truck had been struck by another car.
The Buckeye State has six cities that are listed in the top 25 for a number of postal employees getting bit by dogs in 2021, Cleveland is number one with 58 attacks. The post office suggests that people keep their dogs inside or behind a fence when a mail carrier comes. Dog owners also could keep them on a leash or in a room away from the door. Letter carriers are also trained to not startle a dog and never assume a dog will not bite. There were more than 5,400 hundred dog attacks on postal employees in 2021.
National Dog Bite Awareness week is coming to an end and the Van Wert Post Office has implemented a new sticker system that could help prevent mail carriers from being bitten.
