Education is changing, and learning through experience is helping reinforce the lessons students are learning in the classroom. The Ohio Association of Two-Year Colleges held their annual conference at Rhodes State College, and they brought in educator and author Candy Van Buskirk to talk about the changing dynamic of education. She says that student engagement has declined, and students respond more favorably to hands-on learning. With two-year colleges helping train the next generation of the workforce, helping students get real-world experiences is key.
One in six adults in Allen County reads at a 3rd grade level or lower, and these numbers haven't really changed in years. The Northwest Ohio Literacy Council and Lima City Schools want to change that statistic. This week is Adult Education and Family Literacy Week. Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith presented them with a proclamation encouraging individuals struggling with basic academic skills to take advantage of the services offered by these two programs. Reading is something anyone can do, and we as a community need to de-stigmatize the issue of adult literacy.
They have locations around the county to provide free, comprehensive programming for children and their families and are currently taking applications. Allen County Head Start and Early Head Start are programs under the West Ohio Community Action Partnership that work with children from birth to 5 years of age to get them ready for school. The program is for low-income families to provide social, emotional, and intellectual growth to their children. They not only work in the classroom but also offer home visits to provide support in parenting skills.
School may be out for the summer, but Elida Elementary is keeping kids engaged with their annual Summer Library Program. Wednesday was the first week of the 3-week program at Elida Elementary, where students K through 5 can participate in fun educational activities along with reading. The program has been going on for over 10 years and uses lots of hands-on activities and STEM projects to get kids excited about reading. Each week there is a theme, and this week was 'adventure awaits, as the kids made tote bags to learn about insects and nature, plus they made Lego karts to race.

The family of Jenny Wandell donated children's author Susan Levine's book "Jenny's First Catch" to every kindergartener in the Lima City Schools District. Jenny Wandell was educated by Lima City Schools, and then went on to be a kindergarten teacher in Michigan. Wandell's siblings say it was her mission to put books in the hands of every kindergartener in her school.
Between getting shots, riding the bus, and being in a classroom for most of the day, starting kindergarten comes with a lot of new and scary experiences. Thankfully, this 'Kindergarten Kamp' helps ease students' and parents' worries by providing an opportunity to learn what school is like before the kids start for real in August.
