The event, now in its third year, allows students to rotate through different stations focused on physical activity, emotional well-being, and mental health awareness.
The grants are funded through a collaboration between Activate Allen County, the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Allen, Auglaize and Hardin Counties, the Mental Health, Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Board of Putnam County, and Mercy Health.
More than 1,400 YMCAs nationwide will host the free community event on Saturday, April 26, encouraging children and their families to stay active both physically and mentally throughout the year.
Major Ron Holman explains, “When they first get hired and depending on whether they have been through the academy or not we put them through a very strict background check, a polygraph, a physical. They take a psychological exam. And when they start, they go through a period of in house training and then they’ll do an 18-week on each shift 6 weeks with a field training officer.”
