A Celina man was shot and killed after coming toward a Mercer County deputy with a knife.

Landers held the annual awards banquet this week with two promotions and one significant retirement. Deputy Robert C. Miller will be retiring his commission as a Special Deputy with the office the end of this year. He began his law enforcement career in 1964 when he started with the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy. R.C. Miller became a Trooper after his graduation in the 66th class of the Highway Patrol. He retired in 1997 after 33 years with the Patrol then commissioned as a Deputy Sheriff that same year. His retirement is the culmination of an honorable 60-year career in this profession.
September 4, 2024, Press Release from the Ohio Department of Public Safety: (COLUMBUS, Ohio) – The Office of Criminal Justice Services announced today the certification of two Ohio law enforcement agencies for state standards established by the Ohio Collaborative Community-Police Advisory Board. Seventeen additional agencies achieved their recertification. Agencies completing the certification process have adopted and implemented the initial two standards regarding use of force and hiring and recruitment while the recertification process takes place on a revolving, three to four-year cycle.
August 29, 2024, Press Release from the Southern District of Ohio United States Marshals Service: Columbus, Ohio – The U.S. Marshals arrested fugitive Jaquez Hoover this morning in Columbus. Jaquez Hoover was wanted by the Columbus Division of Police for two counts of Murder. Hoover was charged with Murder in Franklin County Municipal Court after an investigation by the Columbus Division of Police Homicide Unit. Hoover allegedly shot and killed Desmond Taylor and Ceilin Richard Peakes Smith at a Columbus nightclub on June 14, 2024. After adopting the fugitive investigation, the Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team (SOFAST) located and safely arrested Hoover this morning in the 4000 block of Glengate Dr. in Columbus.
The U.S. Marshals and other law enforcement agencies captured a fugitive sex offender Friday afternoon at a home in the 400 block of Cornell Drive. 38-year-old Quinntel Bagley is accused of kidnapping the same Grove City woman twice since June.

Overall, there are 633 certified agencies throughout Ohio that have met the initial standards. Additionally, 29,686 officers (representing 90.27% of all law enforcement officers in Ohio, including most of Ohio’s metropolitan areas) are employed by an agency that is involved in some form of the certification process.
