The Federal Social Security Fairness Act passed through the U.S. Senate Chamber in the final session Saturday before Congress resets next year. This act will eliminate WEP and GPO allowing public employees that pay into state sponsored retirement systems to receive their full social security benefits.

About 70 million Americans will see a boost of about 8.7% in their Social Security checks starting as soon as Friday.  The raise in benefits will go to both those receiving regular social security and supplemental security income benefits.

 The hike in the cost-of-living adjustments is the highest since 1981, based on inflation.  Average payouts will increase by more than $140 per month.  An added benefit for recipients is that Medicare premiums are going down, while social security benefits go up.

You must bring your driver's license or state identification for adults and social security cards for everyone or guardian papers. You will also need proof of income and a recent utility bill. The important thing is to get signed up if you need help.

Some customers of a Cleveland based bank got their information stolen by hackers.   KeyBank says hackers stole personal data including social security numbers, addresses, and account numbers of an unspecified number of its home mortgage customers.  It says the data was lost in the breach of the Georgia Insurance Services Company, Overby-Seawall, and compromised the data of its corporate clients.  A letter sent to an affected KeyBank customer said the data was stolen July 5th.  KeyBank operates in 15 states and has close to $200 billion in assets.

The BBB says that scammers will start the call with claiming that your Social Security number has been compromised or suspended. The real Social Security Administration will never contact you over the phone.
