A New Paris man who caused a fatal car-versus-buggy crash in Mercer County has been sentenced to prison.
Trey Frech pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide and three counts of vehicular assault for the 2023 crash in Mercer County.
It was a full house Monday night in Convoy as area residents learn about 3 upcoming major road construction projects in Van Wert County. The first project is at the intersections of U.S. Route 30 at Convoy-Heller Road and Payne Road where State Route 49 intersects. At these two locations, ODOT plans to construct a restricted crossing U-turn similar to the concept at U.S. Route 30 and Thayer Road in Allen County. The second project consists of a building an overpass taking Convoy Road over U.S. Route 30. There will be no access to U.S. Route 30 from Convoy Road. The third project is located at U.S. Route 224 and Lincoln Highway where the intersection will be converted into a single-lane roundabout. ODOT says these projects are needed as an increase in traffic and number of fatal crashes have been noted.
A Hamilton, Ohio, woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash yesterday in Mercer County. 33-year-old Jamie Teufel died from her injuries from a crash that happened sometime Sunday afternoon on State Route 49 near Koch Road. According to Sheriff Jeff Grey, a deputy was patrolling that area around 6:30 p.m. Sunday night when the wrecked SUV was found. Teufel was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital, where she ended up dying from her injuries. Deputies say she was traveling south on 49 when her vehicle went left of center and then into a ditch. The SUV traveled in the ditch for a while, until it hit a culvert. The vehicle went airborne and rolled multiple times. The crash remains under investigation.
