In December 2023, Mercer County deputies said Frech was heading north on State Route 49 when he switched lanes to pass a van and struck a family in a horse-drawn buggy head-on. There were four members of John Schwartz's family in the buggy. Schwartz, his pregnant wife, and their 3-year-old son were taken to the hospital, while their 1-year-old daughter died at the scene.

Frech’s driver’s license will also be suspended for five years.
