MERCER COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - A young child was killed in a head-on crash between a buggy and a car in Mercer County late Friday afternoon.
The sheriff's office says one-year-old Roseanne Schwartz died at the scene. She was riding in the horse-drawn buggy with her family when they were hit by the car driven by 24-year-old Trey Frech of New Paris, Ohio.
Deputies say Frech was heading north on State Route 49 near Oregon Road when he went into the southbound lane while trying to pass a van, hitting the buggy. He was ejected from the car and life-flighted to Fort Wayne.
Others in the buggy included 26-year-old Elizabeth Schwartz, who is seven months pregnant. She was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, and three-year-old John Schwartz, Jr. was taken to Mercer Health. His dad, John Schwartz Senior, was treated and released.
The crash is under investigation and being referred to the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office.
