The Lima Noon Optimist Safety City, a fixture in the community for almost 50 years, has seen a surge in student participation this year. Officer Eric Mericle of the Lima Police Department said their field trip program has been attracting students from surrounding counties, hitting a milestone of 1,400 student visitors since March.
The organization will host an open house reunion at its campus, encouraging all past participants to visit and explore the many improvements made over the years. Changes include upgrades to the classroom as well as enhancements to the signature structures that define Safety City.
As a part of National Fire Prevention Week, the Lima Fire Department invited the community out to see how they teach children about fire safety.

Safety City like you've never seen it before. "It is a realistic experience," said Matt Douglass, the Safety City Officer.
