ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - They have taught thousands of students among them, and they are helping others to teach future generations.
The Allen County Retired Teachers Association awarded 13 teachers with grants totaling $3,100. The money was used for projects that encourage students to learn in different ways, from flashcards to sensory tables to graphic novels.
"I was able to purchase 38 books with the grant that I was given, and the books were checked out nearly 200 times since January. So it's been super exciting to see engage that may not typically pick up a chapter book but will pick up a graphic novel and engage in reading all the same," said Melissa Johnson, a 5th grade teacher at Allen East Local School District.
The grant money is raised in several ways, including through raffles and donations.
