Downtown Lima to host superheroes for Free Comic Book Day

LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Downtown Lima will be filled with your favorite superheroes this weekend for Free Comic Book Day.

It has become a fan favorite as kids and adults can get up close and personal with heroes that come off the pages of their favorite comics. The Fantastic Four and Spider-Man will be on hand this year for pictures and conversation. Organizers of the event say that research demonstrates the power of comics in building young readers.

"In my experience, you give that kid a comic book and they're not going to throw it away, they're going to want to flip through the pages, and even if they're struggling with some of the words, they've got the pictures there to help guide them," said Marc Bowker, owner of Alter Ego Comics. "We want to get comic books into kids' hands so that they can be introduced to this wonderful American art form and become lifelong readers."

Free Comic Book Day will be Saturday, May 2nd from 10 AM to 2 PM at Alter Ego Comics on North Main Street in downtown Lima. Each attendee can pick five free comics from a selection of more than 25 available issues. Bowker says cosplay is encouraged, but not required.
