LIMA, OH (WLIO) - February is Black History Month, and the Allen County Genealogical Society held a presentation on the early African Americans in Allen County.

Exploring early African American history in Allen County

The society conducted research to identify the earliest African Americans in the county and to learn more about their lives and descendants.

This event was a continuation of last year's discussion on early Black settlers. The society conducted research to identify the earliest African Americans in the county and to learn more about their lives and descendants.

"Well, everybody has parents, and everybody has grandparents. You came from somewhere, and it's really wonderful to learn who your forebears were and where they came from. And particularly now with Black History Month, looking into the early African Americans of the county, which is a very rich history that goes as far back as 1837," said Jennifer Rockhold, member of the Allen Co. Genealogical Society. "I hope to increase interest in family history and other people. As I said, anybody can do this sort of research. So I want to educate people about free resources, something they can do in their own time and research their own family history. It's for everybody," said Jennifer.

The next genealogical society meeting will be held on March 15 at the Allen County Museum, where they will work on mapping connections to the early settlers of Allen County.
