LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Congressman Jim Jordan says he is ready to vote to eliminate the Department of Education.
On March 20th, President Donald Trump signed an executive order instructing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to begin dismantling the department. Congressional approval would be required to fully abolish it. The president said he hoped Democrats would support the measure.
Jordan wants federal education funding redirected to classrooms.
“Think about this, the average person at the Department of Education makes $144,000 the average teacher in the classroom here at Elida Schools, or Lima Schools, or any school down the county, is probably making half of that. And then you ask yourself, sort of the fundamental question, who actually helps the student, the teacher in the classroom making $70,000 at the bureaucrat in D.C. make $140,000 we all know the answer to that. And worse yet, the bureaucrat making twice what the teacher makes is probably making life tougher for the teacher in the classroom to actually impact and help, to help the student. So, it's it's stupid, and everyone knows it. Let's get rid of the drama. Let's give the money back to schools,” said Jordan, who represents Ohio’s 4th District.
A recent NBC poll of state officials found they are not prepared to assume full responsibility for students’ education. The move could also face legal challenges.
