LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — More than 60 seniors at Lima Senior High School were recognized for their future plans during the school’s annual Academic Signing Day ceremony.

Students signed certificates committing to higher education, military service or entering the workforce after graduation. The tradition began in 2015 and is designed to celebrate students’ academic achievements and career goals.

School officials said they hope the event encourages students to think about their own futures and apply the skills they learn at Lima Senior toward achieving their goals.

“I feel like it was very important, especially for my art. I didn't know there was as many opportunities as I could take here with my art. And then I'm majoring in studio art at Bowling Green, so it's kind of already got a little bit of a dip into what it'll be like after I graduate college,” said Yarah Al-Hisha, who plans to attend Bowling Green State University.

Principal Darnell Collins said the ceremony highlights the importance of academic achievement alongside athletics.

“We're really happy for our students and their families that they are prepared to go on for the next chapter of their lives. They've all worked hard to get to this point. Yeah, we want to enjoy and celebrate our kids that are doing things academically as well. You know, you see a lot of athletic signings, but it's always important to make sure people realize that the students are focusing on their academics as well," Collins said.

The seniors are scheduled to graduate Saturday, May 23.
