LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — For 25 years, New Lima – Housing for the Future has been dedicated to bringing affordable housing to the Lima community, and the organization plans to continue its mission for as long as possible.

The nonprofit made its first investment in 2000, launching what has grown into a $41 million initiative that has provided 245 affordable housing units across the city. One of its notable developments is the Shirley Daley Senior Village, which offers affordable housing for residents age 62 and older.

On Thursday, residents of the Shirley Daley Senior Village gathered for their annual planting party, an event that brings neighbors together to share a common hobby and beautify their surroundings.

“We're having fun, and we get together to make our planters and get together with each other, because some of us don't see each other often,” said Peggy Robertson, a resident of the Shirley Daley Senior Village. “Even though we live here together, we don't see each other, and it's just the camaraderie of it.”

New Lima’s housing efforts extend beyond senior apartments.
“Senior rental apartments, we’ve got workforce, single-family homes that are rentals, and then we also build and develop single-family homes that are then sold to households that qualify,” said Scott Frenger, executive director of New Lima – Housing for the Future.

The organization plans to expand further this summer, with the addition of two more affordable homes on Hazel Avenue.
