July 9, 2025, Press Release from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources:

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Summer is underway, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is reminding all parkgoers, boaters, swimmers, and outdoor enthusiasts to make a summer safety plan before heading out for any outdoor activities. A safety plan is especially important for anyone recreating on water.

“Summer is a time where we see our state parks, nature preserves, forests, rivers and lakes full of people with their families and we want everyone to have fun while staying safe,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “A safety plan is something I encourage everyone to make ahead of a day trip to the lake or a weekend in one of our state parks.”

ODNR encourages people to consider these summer safety tips:

  • Stay with a buddy whether you’re hiking, swimming, or paddling
  • Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket on the water
  • Stay in the designated swimming areas at state park beaches
  • Have a plan: whether you’re floating, hiking or boating share your route/where you’re going and when you plan to return
  • Boat sober
  • Stay hydrated
  • Know the area: Look out for boating speed zones or any challenging portions of trails
  • Be aware of weather patterns or potential storm risks that may impact your plans

ODNR promotes several campaigns for safe boating and water recreation, which are important in all four seasons. As part of the “Keep Water Matters Afloat” campaign, ODNR shares boating tips around state parks, at conventions, and all year long including National Safe Boating Week in May. ODNR also encourages the public to take Ohio Boating Education Courses (OBEC). This spring, ODNR offered more than 35 free OBEC courses to help prepare boaters for the season.

During the Fourth of July Weekend, Natural Resources Officers patrolled Ohio’s waterways for the national “Operation Dry Water” campaign. The focus of the weekend is to educate boaters about the danger of boating under the influence.

To help promote safe water recreation, ODNR also offers lifejacket loaner stations at many state parks. This year, 32 loaner stations were installed, providing free access to life jackets in a variety of sizes. Additional loaner stations at more parks are also in the works.

ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR website at ohiodnr.gov.
