Berheide, the retired deputy chief of the Lima Fire Department says, “You don’t see it very much, but the Lima Fire Department really pushes safety with the public. Whether it comes from house fires, our prevention bureau, building inspections, or working with safety city with the kids. If we can start young with the little kids, it does pay off in the long run and even with our own guys: safety, safety, safety.”

Berheide was nominated for his pivotal role in the COVID-19 pandemic plan for the fire department and the city of Lima. His colleagues say he was a constant promoter of safety in every role that he filled.
