Second graders choreograph dream-themed dance for public performance

LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Students at Lima City SchoolsLiberty Arts Magnet are learning how to transform their dreams into movement as part of a weeklong dance residency.

Second graders began by sharing what they want to be when they grow up — from police officers and basketball players to veterinarians. Artist-in-residence Brianna Rhodes then guided them in turning those ideas into choreography, helping the class create a full dance routine in just 40 minutes.

“So some people were telling Miss Brianna their dreams, and so we all made up a dance all together and danced to a song which matches the dance,” said student Brooklyn Huggins.

Rhodes said working with students in the moment is what makes the experience rewarding.

“Honestly, it's the most inspiring part, because they come up with things you never thought of,” Rhodes said. “We didn’t have anything prepped before then, so I really got to use ideas off the dome and work with them. It challenges me to take what they have and make it unique to them while using their energy.”

This marks the second year Rhodes has worked with students at Liberty Arts Magnet. She is collaborating with several classes, each creating their own performances.

Students will showcase their finished dances on stage at the Lima Senior High School’s Joe Henderson Auditorium. The performance is free and open to the public and will take place Thursday, April 30, beginning at 5 p.m.
