CRIDERSVILLE, Ohio (WLIO) — Third graders at Cridersville Elementary School got a live civics lesson Tuesday as the Cridersville Village Council took its monthly meeting on the road.

The meeting, held at the school, gave students a firsthand look at how local government operates. The visit coincided with the students’ classroom unit on government.

“It’s a chance for the students to see what happens at a council meeting while they’re learning about government in class,” said Wapakoneta City Schools Superintendent Aaron Rex. “It’s good for them to see people doing community service. And hopefully one day, when these kids grow up, they’ll want to give back to their community as well. Cridersville is a great place to live, and these kids will hopefully come back and reside in this community in the future.”

During the meeting, students learned that council members and the mayor are elected to serve the village and make decisions for the community’s well-being.

The meeting, held at the school, gave students a firsthand look at how local government operates.

The students also had the opportunity to ask council members questions, including how much they earn and how long they’ve served on the council. In turn, council members asked the students what they would like to see added to Cridersville. The students’ suggestions included a Bass Pro Shop, a candy store, and more places to fish.

This marks the fifth year the Cridersville Village Council has held a meeting at the elementary school.
